Windows Server vNext is Windows Server 2019

Microsoft has announced that the next version of Windows Server in the Long Term Servicing Contract (LTSC) track will be Windows Server 2019 with release scheduled for the second half of 2018. This new release will roll in changes from the Bi-Annual release: Windows Server version 1709. Main changes to Windows Server 2019 versus Windows Server 2016:

  • Nano Server only available as a container image
  • Optimized for hybrid cloud deployments
  • Project Honolulu – browser-based server management
  • Smaller, more efficient containers (50-80% for Server Core image)
  • Security: Protect, detect, respond
  • Shielded VMs extended to Linux VMs
  • Encrypted Networks
  • Windows Defender Advanced Threat Protection
  • Windows Subsystem on Linux: run Linux containers with Windows Containers

The LTSC track of Windows Server will continue to have a GUI installation option; however, the Bi-annual release track has only the Server Core installation option.
